What Is Descript?

Descript is a transcript-first audio and video editor. Upload a recording, let it transcribe in one of 25 languages, and cut the media by deleting or rearranging text — the waveform follows the words. Around that core it layers multitrack editing (Sequences), the Rooms remote-recording studio, screen and webcam recording, captions, filler-word removal, Studio Sound, AI voices, avatars, and an agentic co-editor called Underlord that takes edit instructions in plain language. Descript also exposes an MCP server so external AI assistants can run edits inside a project.

The model works best when spoken words are the edit decision. It does not replace frame-precise timing, color work, or motion graphics; for that, Descript can hand your timeline to Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Pro Tools, or Resolve (Creator plan and up).

How a Descript Workflow Actually Runs

A typical podcast session: record locally or bring guests in through Rooms (recordings land as separate tracks per speaker), let Descript transcribe and label speakers, do the first cut purely in the text — delete every "um," cut digressions, reorder answers — then switch to the timeline for music, levels, and intro. Dynamic captions can be generated from the same transcript, and clips for social media can be pulled from the finished sequence. Mistakes in the narration can be patched by typing corrections and regenerating them in your own cloned voice.

Understand Media Hours and AI Credits Before Subscribing

Descript meters usage with two currencies. Media minutes count uploaded and recorded media (still images count as 1 second each); AI credits are spent by Underlord, Studio Sound, filler-word removal, Green Screen, Eye Contact, AI speech, avatars, and generated video. Two official details are easy to miss. First, credits are shared per drive, and any editor seat can drain the pool. Second, even chatting with Underlord consumes AI credits, and agentic actions have non-deterministic costs — the docs themselves warn that you cannot fully predict what a co-editor session will charge.

This metering is the direct cause of Descript's loudest current controversy. In late 2025 Descript migrated legacy "unlimited AI" plans to the credit system; power users on Trustpilot report a month of credits lasting "about a day" for daily Underlord use, while G2 reviews (a product-review audience) stay at roughly 4.6/5. Before you commit, price your real monthly AI usage against the plan's credit allowance — Studio Sound applied to every episode is the classic credit drain.

Practical Tips

• Proofread the transcript before cutting. Cuts follow the text, so transcription errors on accents, names, and jargon become bad edits. Multitrack transcription of separately recorded tracks gives markedly better speaker labeling than a single mixed file.
• Export the timeline, don't fight the tool. When a project needs real finishing, use timeline export (Premiere XML, FCPXML, Pro Tools, Reaper, Audition) and do the fine work in your NLE. Note it does not carry Sequences or Avatars.
• Check your credit math first. Log the credits consumed by one typical episode before batch-processing a season. If a month of credits won't cover four episodes, move to manual effects or a higher tier before you're mid-deadline. Top-ups exist on Creator and above only.
• Use Rooms session accounting to your advantage. A Rooms recording is metered by session length, not per participant, so a one-hour five-guest call costs 60 media minutes, not 300.
• Verify saves on long or cloud-flaky sessions. The most serious recurring user report is edits silently reverting to raw footage after sync failures. Keep version history and exports of anything billable.

Limitations and Risks

• Long-project performance. Lag and crash reports concentrate exactly where podcasters live — hour-plus, multi-track timelines. Descript maintains its own performance-troubleshooting article, which amounts to a known-issues list.
• AI quality is uneven. Voice regeneration works for word-scale fixes; reviewers consistently find longer generated passages robotic. Transcription accuracy drops on strong accents, overlapping voices, and technical vocabulary.
• Weak finishing controls. Limited export settings, 4K gated to Creator and up, no real color grading or motion graphics layer.
• Cloud dependency. Projects sync through Descript's cloud; a sync failure can cost work, as the lost-edit reports show.
• AI/data controls are an Enterprise feature. Training opt-out and custom retention live on the Enterprise tier.

Who Should Use Descript (and Who Shouldn't)

It fits podcasters, course creators, YouTube talking-head producers, and teams turning spoken content into clips at speed. It is the wrong primary tool for multi-cam narrative work, motion-heavy projects, or agencies that need broadcast-grade screen recording and a clean client-review layer outside the editing interface.

Public Feedback in Brief

Praise across G2, Capterra, and Trustpilot consistently centers on text-based editing cutting dialogue-editing time roughly in half. Complaints cluster on four documented themes: credit depletion after the 2025 migration, long-project lag and instability, screen-recording output below professional standard, and slow support. The split between G2 (~4.6) and Trustpilot (~3.3) ratings largely reflects which of those themes a reviewer personally hit.
