What Is Midjourney?
Midjourney is a paid image-generation service rather than a free tool. You describe an image in text, and it returns stylised options you can vary, upscale, or edit by region. It is strongest for moodboards, concept art, editorial illustration, and open-ended visual exploration.
It is not a precision layout tool: exact typography, logos, and repeatable brand templates are out of scope. Treat it as a candidate generator, then finish in a design tool.

- Variations, upscales, and aspect-ratio control: widen or reframe a promising shot without starting over.

Write a clear subject, set an aspect ratio, and iterate on a prompt you like. Keep a style token so a set stays coherent, and do final typography outside the tool.
Pricing: Plans and GPU Hours
Midjourney has no standing free tier; a limited trial exists only in the separate niji journey mobile app. All plans auto-renew monthly or yearly until you cancel. Prices checked September 2026 on the official plans page:
- Basic $10/month (annual $96, about $8/month): 3.3 Fast GPU hours per month, roughly 200 images. Relax mode is not included.
- Standard $30/month (annual $288, $24/month): 15 Fast GPU hours plus unlimited Relax image generations.
- Pro $60/month (annual $576, $48/month): 30 Fast GPU hours, unlimited Relax images and standard-definition video, and Stealth Mode.
- Mega $120/month (annual $1,152, $96/month): 60 Fast GPU hours, the largest concurrent-job limits.
Annual billing saves 20 percent, and extra Fast time costs $4 per hour. Companies above $1,000,000 USD in yearly revenue must buy Pro or Mega. Awarded bonus Fast time expires after 30 days.
Web App vs Discord
One subscription covers both midjourney.com and the Discord bot, running the same models and parameters. Per the official comparison, the web app has the integrated Editor (remix, vary region, pan, zoom out, paint, retexture) on one canvas, plus an Organize page with folders, bulk actions, and search. Discord is where the community lives: public channels, collaborative generation, and emoji reactions for quick actions. A few power-user settings, such as custom suffixes and option sets, can only be created in Discord, though they can be used from the web. Start on the web; add Discord when you want community feedback.
Payments and Refunds
Midjourney processes payments through Stripe. Accepted methods are major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) plus, in some regions, digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, Alipay, and Link. PayPal is not supported.
On refunds, the official policy is strict: you qualify only with under 20 lifetime GPU minutes, counting Fast, Turbo, and Relax time. The option appears automatically when you cancel; processing can take up to 10 business days. Accounts suspended for terms violations are not eligible. Cancel any time from the Manage Subscription page.
Parameters and Model Versions
Controls append to prompts and work on both platforms. The core set from the official parameter list: --ar for aspect ratio, --stylize (0 to 1000) for artistic interpretation, --chaos (0 to 100) for variety between results, --no to exclude elements, --seed for comparable reruns, --raw to reduce default styling, --sref with --sw for style references, --iw for image-prompt weight, and --tile for seamless patterns.
The default model is V8.2, focused on aesthetics, image quality, and personalization; it outputs 2048px HD images with --hd. V8.x replaced the older Omni and Character Reference tools with an Edit Model driven by --edit. Older versions remain selectable with --v, and --niji switches to the anime-focused model line. Check the version matrix before reusing prompts written for V6 or V7.
Limitations and Trade-offs
There is no free tier, and Fast GPU time vanishes quickly on iterative work. Images are public by default; Stealth Mode needs Pro or Mega. Prompting cannot guarantee exact typography, logos, or product geometry, so review licensing and confidentiality before commercial use.
Who Should Use Midjourney?
It fits art directors, illustrators, and marketers who value distinctive visual exploration and will pay from $10/month. Standard ($30) is the sweet spot for steady use thanks to unlimited Relax generations; teams needing privacy should budget for Pro. It is a poor fit if you need a free tool, editable vector layouts, or exact text rendering. Pair it with a design tool rather than expecting finished deliverables.
