Midjourney
What Is Midjourney?
Midjourney is a paid image-generation service rather than a free tool. You describe an image in text, and it returns several stylised options you can vary, upscale, or edit by region. It is strongest for moodboards, concept art, editorial illustration, and open-ended visual exploration where many directions are welcome before you pick a final image.
It is not a precision layout tool. If you need exact typography, a specific logo, or a repeatable brand template, Midjourney will fight you. Treat it as a way to generate candidates quickly, then take those into a proper design tool.
Key Features
- Text-to-image and image-to-image β generate fresh images or start from a reference and iterate.
- Variations, upscales, and aspect-ratio control β widen or reframe a promising shot without starting over.
- Region editing β rework part of an image (a face, a logo, a background) while keeping the rest.
- Repeatable parameters β consistent style or character tokens for a coherent set.
- Cross-tool fit β export into Canva, Photoshop, or a figma board for finishing.
Get good results by writing a clear subject, setting an aspect ratio, and iterating on a prompt you like. Keep a short style or character token so a set stays coherent, and do your final typography and layout outside the tool.
Pricing
Midjourney has no standing free tier. Public subscriptions are Basic $10/month, Standard $30/month, Pro $60/month, and Mega $120/month, with annual billing discounted. Basic includes about 3.3 Fast GPU hours; Standard adds unlimited Relax generations. Prices checked August 2026 β see Midjourney pricing.
| Plan | Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10/mo | ~3.3 Fast GPU hours |
| Standard | $30/mo | Unlimited Relax gens |
| Pro | $60/mo | Stealth Mode |
| Mega | $120/mo | Highest Fast GPU pool |
Limitations and Trade-offs
There is no free tier for everyday use, and Fast GPU time can disappear quickly on iterative work. Public plans generally generate publicly visible jobs; Stealth Mode is a Pro and Mega feature. Prompt control does not guarantee exact typography, layouts, people, logos, or product geometry. Review licensing, likeness, and client confidentiality before using any result commercially.
Who Should Use Midjourney?
It fits art directors and creators who value distinctive visual exploration and are willing to iterate. Marketing teams use it to prototype campaign visuals fast. If you mostly need precise mockups or editable vector layouts, pair it with a design tool rather than relying on it alone.
Midjourney vs Alternatives
Use Midjourney for image generation and Canva AI for editable designs with brand assets. See the alternative list for more. Midjourney wins on aesthetic quality; it is weaker on precise control and free-tier access.
