ChatGPT Review 2026: Free vs Plus vs Pro Pricing & Limits
Featured tool What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is OpenAI’s general-purpose AI assistant, available in a browser and desktop and mobile apps. It is the obvious starting point if you want one place to draft, brainstorm, explain a spreadsheet, inspect an image, search the web, write code, or turn a rough brief into a usable first version. That breadth is its advantage—and also a reason not to confuse a fluent answer with finished work.
Price matters early. The Free plan costs $0; Plus is $20 per month; Pro is $200 per month. OpenAI’s former Team plan is now called ChatGPT Business, priced at $25 per user/month on annual billing or $30 per user/month monthly. Enterprise is quote-based. Prices are in USD and can vary with taxes, currency, region, or a future plan change, so check OpenAI’s pricing page before buying.
What you actually get
ChatGPT currently uses the GPT-5 family as its default experience, with plan-dependent model access and usage headroom rather than one fixed model for every person. The paid plans chiefly buy more capacity, faster access during busy periods, and more advanced modes; they do not make every response correct. OpenAI changes model routing and named variants regularly, so a workflow should be tested in the account and plan that will actually use it.
- Everyday work: draft and edit emails, briefs, documentation, plans, lessons, and structured tables; translate or change tone without rebuilding the whole document.
- Code and data: explain a repository, propose a patch, work with uploaded files, write formulas or scripts, and help investigate an error. Run tests and review the diff yourself.
- Search and research: web search can surface current sources, while deep research is better suited to a longer, source-backed investigation. Open the cited pages; citations can be incomplete, stale, or attached to an over-broad claim.
- Multimodal work: depending on plan and rollout, ChatGPT can work with text, files, images, voice, and image generation. It is useful for interpreting material, not for silently replacing a domain expert.
- Agent mode: eligible plans can ask ChatGPT to carry out multi-step online tasks with the user in control. Treat it like a junior operator: inspect its proposed actions, never hand it credentials casually, and keep approval gates around purchases, publishing, deletions, or sensitive data.
OpenAI does not present one universal consumer context-window number for ChatGPT. Effective context, file limits, tool access, and message caps differ by plan, selected model, availability, and demand. For a long contract or codebase, use staged prompts: ask for a map of the material first, then give one bounded task and a required output format. That is more dependable than assuming that a large upload was fully understood.
Pricing plans
- Free — $0/month: a practical way to try the core chat experience, with limited access to GPT-5 capabilities, messages/uploads, image generation, deep research, and other premium tools.
- Plus — $20/month: for frequent individual use when Free limits interrupt work and higher limits or expanded tools have real value.
- Pro — $200/month: aimed at people who use the most capable models and advanced tools intensely enough that Plus limits become a cost.
- ChatGPT Business (formerly Team) — $25/user/month annually or $30 monthly: a workspace option for teams that need shared administration and business features.
- Enterprise — contact sales: for larger organizations needing procurement, governance, security, deployment, and support arrangements.
Who it fits
ChatGPT fits solo professionals who spend much of the day turning information into decisions or drafts; students who use it to practice rather than submit unexamined answers; developers who want a fast second set of eyes; and teams that can define an approved data policy. Plus is easy to justify when it saves recurring context-switching. Pro is harder to justify unless the higher limits materially change a high-volume workday. A company should evaluate Business or Enterprise separately from consumer subscriptions when ownership, retention, access control, and data handling matter.
Limitations worth knowing
It can invent facts, citations, configuration details, and confident reasoning. It may miss an exception in an uploaded document or produce code that looks plausible but fails in the real environment. Rate limits and tool availability can change without warning, especially on Free. Web access is not a substitute for source evaluation, and agent actions need supervision. Do not paste confidential client data, credentials, regulated records, or unpublished material into a personal account without confirming the applicable controls and policy.
